The Hungry Eleven

About

We are a co-operative of three young families (eleven mouths total) in Austin, TX trying to feed ourselves compassionately, healthfully, and sanely.  We swap simple weeknight dinners with each other once a week.  Our goal is to get ourselves through the work week without having to cook too much while wee ones are under foot.

We each make three portions of a family meal on the weekend.  We keep one for our own family, and we bring the other two portions to our weekly swap meet.  We meet on Monday afternoons at a member's home to exchange meals and parenting stories from the previous week, and to play with our kids.

We each bring a meal every week, unless one of our families is ill or on vacation or otherwise unable.

We're veggie-leaning, but have been known to serve each other pork chops, meatloaf, chili mac, goulash.

We tend to swap main dishes centered around some form of protein, although we often offer the accompanying pasta, rice, or bread for the dish we're swapping, too.  We're each responsible for making our own salads and fresh veggies.

Although most of us appreciate spicy food, we try not to make our meals too spicy for young palettes.  All of our littles are under the age of three.

We like whole grains, beans, fruits and vegetables.

We have agreed not to serve each other quiche.

While we like vegan food in general, we agree that lasagne is simply better with cheese.
